Two students die in motorbike crash after “pens down” celebration in Balungo

Okada rider has an accident

Two young boys from the Balungo community in the Bongo District of the Upper East Region lost their lives in a tragic motorbike crash on Tuesday, 18 June 2025.

The fatal collision occurred shortly after the duo had attended a “pens down” party—a celebration traditionally held by students to mark the end of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

The victims, both male and residents of Balungo, had just completed the nationwide exams. According to eyewitness accounts, their motorbike collided head-on with another motorcycle travelling at high speed from the opposite direction. The impact of the crash was severe, and both boys reportedly died instantly at the scene.

Their remains were later returned to their families and laid to rest the following day, Wednesday, 19 June. The incident has cast a dark cloud over the community, turning what should have been a joyful milestone into a moment of deep sorrow.

Family members, teachers, and fellow residents have been left devastated. Many described the deaths as a cruel twist of fate—young lives lost just as they were stepping into a new phase of their academic journey.
