Two million Ghanaians register for TIN numbers – GRA

The Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA)), Emmanuel Kofi Nti has disclosed that close to two million people have a Tax Identification Number (TIN).

According to Mr Nti, the strategy to introduce the TIN had improved tax collection across the country.

He said as at December 2018, the number of persons with a TIN was only hundreds away from reaching two million.

“The TIN has helped, as of December 2017, the people on the TIN were 1,017,384. Close to the end of December (2018) we were just, less than 400 away from two million and the performances of the small tax-payer offices are indicative of the role of the TIN registration if the enforcement is done,” Mr Nti said in an interview with Citi FM.

“In “In that, there has been improvement in the collection from the self-employed area within the small tax-payer offices across the country”.

A Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) is a 11-digit unique number generated by GRA for persons including corporate entities upon application.

It is part of efforts to improve tax compliance and broaden the tax net in Ghana.  The GRA as part of its operational standards pledges to generate the number within 48 hours upon application accompanied with a valid national identification number such as Driver’s license, Passport, Voter’s ID.
