Two fined GHC1,560 for diesel theft and dishonest receipt

The sentence, delivered by His Worship Charles Owusu Nsiah, comes with an alternative of three months’ imprisonment each should the convicts fail to pay the fines. Both pleaded guilty to the charges

The Tarkwa District Court One has fined Emmanuel Tawiah, a labourer, and Ibrahim Mohamed, a businessman, GHC780 each for stealing and dishonestly receiving diesel from AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem Mine.

The sentence, delivered by His Worship Charles Owusu Nsiah, comes with an alternative of three months’ imprisonment each should the convicts fail to pay the fines. Both pleaded guilty to the charges.

Police Sergeant Enoch Assan Donkoh, who prosecuted the case, told the court that the complainant, Gilbert Adom Mensah, is an employee of AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem Mine, which had been experiencing a series of diesel thefts on its concession.

In response, youth in the Mile 7 community formed a watchdog committee to patrol the area and apprehend suspects linked to the ongoing thefts.

On 15 January 2025, at about 2:00 a.m., Michael Boamah, a member of the watchdog team, spotted Tawiah and another suspect identified as Arhin currently on the run, each carrying a jerry can suspected to contain stolen diesel.

Boamah followed the pair to Mohamed’s residence, where he questioned them about the diesel. Their failure to provide a convincing explanation prompted Boamah to alert other members of the committee. With the support of the police at Iduapriem Mine, the suspects were arrested.

According to Sergeant Donkoh, both accused were handed over to the police along with the containers of diesel. Investigations revealed that Tawiah and Arhin had siphoned diesel from parked machines at the Amax yard within the mine’s concession and sold it to Mohamed.

The court found both men guilty and issued the fines accordingly.
