TV XYZ retracts false allegation against Adwoa Animah, issues public apology over identity mix-up

Accra-based television station TV XYZ has officially retracted a defamatory broadcast in which it falsely identified Adwoa Animah, a prominent supporter of former Vice President and NPP flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, as a UK-based TikTok personality named Alberta Ocran.

The apology follows strong backlash from Animah, who had earlier condemned the broadcast as a “reckless misrepresentation” of her identity and signalled intent to pursue legal action.

In a statement aired on the same programme where the misidentification occurred, the host, Mugabe Maase, admitted the error, saying:

“This was a case of mistaken identity. The images we used during the broadcast were incorrect. We sincerely apologise to Adwoa Animah for the distress and harm this may have caused.”

The original segment, which aired earlier this week, linked Animah’s image to a controversial TikTok account operated by a woman alleged to be inciting political tension from the United Kingdom.

However, Animah quickly refuted the claim, stating categorically that she is not Alberta Ocran, has never lived in the UK, and has no ties to the said TikTok content.

Her response drew significant public attention, particularly given her active role in the Bawumia campaign, with many questioning whether the error was a politically motivated smear or a genuine oversight.

According to Animah, several concerned individuals reached out to TV XYZ prior to the apology but were met with what she described as “arrogant and dismissive responses”.

She had warned that the misrepresentation posed serious risks to her safety and reputation and could not be taken lightly.

The station’s public retraction and apology appear to be a step toward de-escalating the matter.

While Animah has yet to respond to the apology, her initial statement made it clear that she intends to hold those responsible accountable under Ghanaian law if the defamatory claims persist.
