Sunyani: PWDs receive support from district social welfare

The social welfare department in Sunyani has donated deep freezers and laptops plus cash to persons living with disability (PWDs)

The Sunyani municipal assembly, through the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development has presented assorted items and cash to 33 persons with disabilities (PWDs).

The items were deep freezers and laptops procured by the assembly out of the 3% allocation to PWDs from the District Assembly Common Fund (DACF).

The MCE for Sunyani, Ansu Kumi in an interview with Asaase News said they aim to engage the beneficiaries in profitable ventures to enable them do away with begging on the streets.

He said the intervention is to make PWDs self-sufficient and empower them to contribute meaningfully to social and national development.

“It is a reality that the youth unemployment has seen some alarming proportions and therefore there is the need for us to understand that entrepreneurship is key to resolving this perennial problem.

“So, that is why we are encouraging them that those that have received monies that they want to establish business, we will come round and inspect what they have used the funds for and see whether indeed they have used the funds for the intended purpose. In that way at least we will all be able to help them at least make some meaningful impact on society,” Kumi said.

The Sunyani Municipal Director of the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development, Belinda Osei Mensah urged the beneficiaries to make optimum use of the items and money to better their lives.

“This money is a grant from the Central government, specifically 5% of the common fund that is allocated to them. So they should make judicious use of it, they shouldn’t just relax that maybe they should toil for it.”

“They should make good use of it because it is through that, that they will get a good livelihood. Help them pay their fees, feed themselves and move on in life.”

The president of the PWDs in the Bono Region, Paul Kwabena Boakye, on behalf of the beneficiaries thanked the government for the support.
