Truecaller has criticised India’s telecom regulator over restrictions it says are limiting its ability to protect users from spam and unwanted calls.
The company’s Chief Executive Officer, Rishit Jhunjhunwala, accused the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) of preventing Truecaller from displaying community-reported spam alerts for calls originating from the country’s designated 1400 and 1600 number series.
According to the CEO, the restrictions have reduced public confidence in legitimate business calls and created opportunities for misuse of the dedicated numbers.
The 1400 and 1600 number series were introduced by Indian authorities in 2024 to distinguish telemarketing calls from service and transaction-related communications as part of efforts to tackle spam and scam calls.
Truecaller said its data shows users are increasingly ignoring calls from the designated number series, with many also choosing to block them.
Because it cannot label the numbers as spam, the company introduced a “Frequently Blocked” badge to alert users when a number has been blocked by a significant number of people.
The dispute follows reports that India’s telecom regulator is seeking powers to take action against caller ID applications that classify numbers from the dedicated series as spam.
India is Truecaller’s largest market, accounting for more than 350 million of its 500 million monthly active users.
The company said it intends to share its data with Indian authorities, insisting that decisions on caller ID services should be guided by evidence.
