The co-founder and senior partner of Africa Legal Associates (ALA), Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, has described Wednesday’s military helicopter crash as “a dark tragedy” on an “unimaginable scale”. The crash led to the deaths of eight Ghanaians, including two serving cabinet ministers.
In a heartfelt post shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday afternoon (6 August), Gabby expressed his grief for the lives lost, declaring that Ghana had never experienced a tragedy of such magnitude involving high-ranking government officials.
“We have witnessed a dark tragedy of unimaginable scale – the loss of eight precious lives, including two esteemed cabinet ministers. To my knowledge, our nation has never endured a loss of such magnitude involving serving high state officials,” he wrote.
Among the victims was Gabby’s personal acquaintance and fellow Koforidua native Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, the Minister of Defence, of whom he made special note.
“This includes my own dear Koforidua brother, Dr Omane Boamah, who perished in the line of duty,” the prominent political strategist said.
Gabby offered his deepest condolences to President John Dramani Mahama, the bereaved families and all Ghanaians grieving the national loss.
The Ghana Armed Forces Z9 helicopter crashed in the Adansi area of the Ashanti Region while on what government sources described as an official mission.
Reports suggest that the five government representatives on board the helicopter were en route to the launch of a government-backed anti-galamsey project in Obuasi.
“May their souls rest in eternal peace. Amen,” Gabby concluded.
