Too much comedy in our songs, says Kwabena Kwabena

Kwabena Kwabena says music is serious business and a billion-dollar venture and musicians must focus on delivering impactful songs

Award-winning highlife musician, guitarist and draftsman, George Kwabena Adua, popularly known as Kwabena Kwabena says there is too much comedy and sensationalism in the Ghanaian music industry.

He says music is serious business and Ghanaian musicians must see it as such.

The musician spoke on Ghana Weekend TV on Friday (19 November) on how some musicians in the country now focus on sensationalism and humour more than producing songs to impact the upcoming generation.

“We popularise certain songs in my opinion that the sensationalism is too much and the humour is too much with our music. Music is not comedy. Music is serious business,” he said.

Kwabena Kwabena said, “But then if we are dealing with the sensationalism and humour part so religiously and paying so much attention to that part and the excellence part is zero then what are we doing. What is the energy? What are you inspiring to the young and upcoming generation?

“As I am speaking to you, if you make a song that doesn’t make sense it will hit and you will get serious artiste also paying attention to that.”

He added, “So that’s the kind of society, it’s very sad and pathetic. Honestly, it’s not funny anymore it’s pathetic and we can’t go far with or music industry if we keep going like this because right now the next artiste is thinking of something silly to do like that because we want to trend.”

According to him, Ghana’s neighbours are making good and serious music which is all over the world, generating good income and also promoting their country.

“Music is a serious business and a billion-dollar venture. It looks like we do not really like genuine money like that. We suppress genuine music.”

“We always talk about our neighbours, they do not sing ‘whashawa’ say over there, they are doing serious business the whole world and even now Ghana we are scrapping our music and following them.”, he said.
