Today is first ever World Drowning Prevention Day

The day which will now be commemorated annually seeks to gives everyone an opportunity to underline the tragic and profound impact drowning could have on families

The United Nations has declared today, Sunday, 25 July 2021 as the maiden World Drowning Prevention Day .

It follows a historic resolution by the UN in April this year to make July 25, the World Drowning Prevention Day.

The day which will now be commemorated annually seeks to gives everyone an opportunity to underline the tragic and profound impact drowning could have on families.

It also highlights other life-saving solutions that can prevent such tragedies in future courses.

Reportedly, drowning has claimed at least 236,000 lives every year. Also, most of the drowning incident involves children and it is considered as among the top ten leading cause of deaths of kids aged 5-14 years.

Ghana has in the past few years witnessed some cases of drowning across the country.

At least 12 teenagers drown in Apam

At least 12 persons were in March this year confirmed dead at Apam in the Gomoa West District of the Central Region, the police have confirmed.

The 12 were part of a group that went to the beach to play and swim but got drowned in the sea on Sunday evening, according to an official police report.

Police spokesperson in the Central Region, ASP Irene Oppong, said the bodies of the deceased have since been retrieved after a search and rescue operation.

The deceased are believed to be between the ages of 14 to 17. She said two boys namely Simon Dadzie,15, and Godfred Apprentsie, 14, were rescued by the search team and are receiving treatment at the St. Luke Catholic Hospital at Apam.

ASP Oppong said the police have begun full investigation into the incident. Beaches in Ghana have remained closed since March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
