Tipper truck accident causes widespread power outage in Ghana
GRIDCo and ECG said engineers were immediately dispatched to the site to assess the damage and begin emergency repair work

A nationwide power outage that disrupted major parts of Ghana on Thursday has been linked to an accident involving a tipper truck, energy authorities have confirmed.
In a joint statement, the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) said the blackout, which occurred at around 1:42 p.m. on 1 May, was caused when a tipper truck struck a high-voltage transmission line between Nkawkaw and Konongo.
According to the statement, the truck was unloading stones at a private construction site when its raised bucket collided with the transmission infrastructure, resulting in severe damage and triggering a cascade of power plant shutdowns.
“This incident caused all power plants at Aboadze and Anwomaso to trip, taking off supply to the Western, Central and Northern parts of the country, as well as some customers in Accra,” the statement noted.
The sudden loss of electricity affected businesses, transportation, and essential services in several regions, prompting concern over the fragility of the national grid.
GRIDCo and ECG said engineers were immediately dispatched to the site to assess the damage and begin emergency repair work.
“Our engineers have mobilised to the location to repair the damaged transmission line and work is on-going to restore all affected areas by 6pm today,” the companies said.
The utility providers apologised for the inconvenience and appealed to the public for patience as restoration efforts continued.
