Gender Ministry launches five-year plan to eliminate human trafficking

The move is to help prevent human trafficking and prosecute offenders of the act in the country

The Ministry of Children, Gender and Social Protection has launched a five-year strategic plan to combat human trafficking in the country.

This is to help prevent human trafficking and prosecute offenders of the act in the country.

The launch was held as part of the celebration of this year’s World Day against Human Trafficking, which is held on 30 July each year.

Speaking at a programme to commemorate the day, Cecilia Abena Dappah, the caretaker minister for the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, said her outfit will provide tracking tools and other materials to help combat human trafficking activities in the country.

“Protection, prosecution and partnership are the important areas of this document. And we are going to provide tracking tools as well as recording materials to improve our recording mechanisms for the grassroots.”

The human trafficking secretariat of the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection rescued 831 victims of child trafficking in 2021 alone.

Giving the breakdown of the figures, Dapaah said a total of 87 cases were reported and investigated, while 32 cases prosecuted involved 37 individuals. Also, 13 convictions were gained for human tracking, nine for child labour, and 10 for other related offenses.

The acting head of the Coalition of NGOs Against Child Trafficking, Isaac Arthur, charged the government to as a matter of urgency increase the fund set up to help fight human trafficking.
