A leading member of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) communications team Ellen Ama Daaku has condemned recent threats made against President John Mahama but accused the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) of encouraging a culture of verbal abuse in politics.
Speaking on The Forum on Asaase Radio, Ellen Ama Daaku described the threats against the president as “despicable” but urged politicians to develop what she called “tough skin” in the face of insults.
“What these young men have done is despicable. How do you say you want to kill the President? But I am just trying to say that they [the NDC] should also grow tough skin,” she said.
Reward
Daaku alleged that the NDC had rewarded individuals who had previously made offensive comments about the NPP leadership.
She further accused the NDC of failing to rein in members who directed what she described as “unprintable words” at President Akufo-Addo, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia and their spouses.
“Now Sammy Gyamfi has been rewarded, Brogya Genfi too has been rewarded, so why won’t another young person also think that it is right for me to do that? So that when the NPP comes to power I will be rewarded,” she argued.
“One of the second ladies who has suffered most is Samira Bawumia. And I didn’t hear the NDC calling their members to order. Now they have been rewarded,” Daaku added.
Glorifying nonsense?
Ama Daaku’s comments come amid heightened political tensions following threats against President Mahama, which both major parties have condemned publicly.
A former Deputy Health Minister, Alexander Abban who was also on the show criticised Ghana’s political class for shielding irresponsible and inflammatory conduct, warning that such practices are weakening the rule of law.
“The politicians are quick to rise to the defence of irresponsible talk, all in a bid to keep the base of our political parties,” Abban said. “The politicians must not glorify nonsense. It is time we let people see crime as crime.”
The former MP believes both ruling and opposition parties have, over the years, politicised criminal conduct — turning serious matters into partisan showdowns.
