The Government of Ghana has officially reverted the name of Kotoka International Airport to Accra International Airport, a decision announced on 23 February 2026, on the eve of the 60th anniversary of the overthrow of Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah.
The announcement follows a petition led by Steven Nhyira Odarteifio, who expressed deep gratitude for the government’s decision, describing it as a “legacy decision” that reflects both moral and material nation-building.
In a statement, Odarteifio said the change is not a distraction from development priorities such as roads, airports, ports, and factories, but a reminder that the symbols a nation chooses to honour are equally important.
He thanked President John Dramani Mahama, the Ministry of Transport, and all agencies involved in implementing the transition, including the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), security services, airlines, and partners.
Odarteifio also acknowledged citizens, media houses, and civil society actors, including Samia Nkrumah, Kwaku Sintim-Misa, Kwesi Pratt Jnr, and the Democracy Hub, for keeping the conversation alive over the years.
“This win belongs to Ghana, the African Union, and the founders of the Organization of African Unity (OAU),” he said, adding that the spirit of Dr Nkrumah is revived in the nation.
Odarteifio urged that while Ghana pursues its development agenda—including jobs, education, health, food security, and industrial growth—the decision proves the country can advance progress without compromising its conscience.
The transition to Accra International Airport is expected to be implemented by the relevant authorities in the coming weeks.
