Government will from next year institute a national fish festival to commemorate international fisheries day, the Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Hawa Koomson has said.

The event will seek to showcase the potentials of the fishery and aquaculture industry to help attract the needed investment.

Speaking at the 37th National Farmers’ Day Celebration on Friday (3 December) Koomson said this yearā€™s Best Fisherman will for the first time be awarded with a two-bedroom apartment.

ā€œBeginning next year, the Ministry will institute the national fish festival to commemorate international fisheries day as done in other countries,ā€ she said.

ā€œIt is the expectation of the Ministry that Such an event will offer the platform to showcase the fisheries and aquaculture sector.ā€

This year’s Farmers’ Day event is on the theme: ā€œPlanting for Food and Jobs ā€” Consolidating Food Systems in Ghanaā€.

The day is being used to honour farmers and fishermen for their enormous contributions to the development of the economy.

What is the Farmers’ Day about?

The Farmers’ Day in Ghana is celebrated on the first Friday of December each year to recognize the contributions of farmers and fishers in the country.

However, in election years, the celebration is moved to the first Friday in November.

The holiday is designed to pay respect to the importance of the farming and fishing industry in the socio-economic growth of the country.

It was instituted in 1985 by the then government after the industries showed a 30% growth in 1984.
