Thirteen-year-old Joanita Borteye qualifies for ITTF Africa Cup quarterfinals
Borteye's compatriot, Cynthia Kwabi, also impressed, reaching the round of 16 after finishing second in her group

Thirteen-year-old Ghanaian table tennis sensation, Joanita Borteye has reached the quarterfinals of the 2024 International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Africa Cup, taking place at the BK Arena in Kigali, Rwanda.
The ITTF Africa Cup kicked off on Sunday (12 May) and is set to run until Tuesday (14 May), which is ahead of the ITTF Africa Olympic Qualification event (a qualifier for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games), scheduled at the same venue from 16–18 May.
Borteye started her campaign in Group 3 of the Women’s Singles, facing off against Egypt’s Mariam Alhodaby and Rwanda’s Chantal Hirwa.
While Borteye fell short in her opening match against Alhodaby (3-0), she bounced back with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Hirwa. This secured her a second-place finish in the group and a spot in the knockout stages.
In the Round of 16, Borteye displayed her composure to defeat Uganda’s Judith Nangonzi 4-1. Now, she sets her sights on a quarterfinal clash against Nigeria’s Offiong Edem, who overcame Ruqayyah Kinoo of Mauritius 4-1 to progress.
Borteye’s compatriot, Cynthia Kwabi, also impressed, reaching the Round of 16 after finishing second in her group. However, her journey ended there with a narrow 4-2 defeat to Cameroon’s Sarah Hanffou.
The match between Borteye and Edem kicks off Monday (13 May), at 5PM at the BK Arena in Kigali.
The young Ghanaian star will aim to continue her dream run in the ITTF Africa Cup as well as secure a coveted spot at the Paris Olympics when she takes part in the ITTF Africa Olympic Qualification event.
