Rural electrification: Power extended to 25 towns and villages in Volta Region

The regional engineer, Michael Buabin, said the extension of power is in line with the government's rural electrification project which aims at getting every community on to the national grid

The management of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Volta Region says the company extended power to 25 towns and villages in the region and parts of the Oti Region in 2022.

The regional engineer, Michael Buabin, said the extension of power is in line with the government’s rural electrification project which aims at getting every community on to the national grid.

He spoke on behalf of the regional managing director. The rural electrification project was first implemented by the late former president, Jerry John Rawlings.

Buabin added that the 25 communities, which are mostly farming and fishing communities, are in the Central Tongu, Adaklu and Ho Districts of the Volta Region, and Worawora and its adjoining islands in the Oti Region.

Speaking to Asaase News, he said that the company has installed 102 automatic switches to determine faults, 45 new transformers and upgraded 46 old transformers to improve service delivery in the region.

He noted that there has been a reduction in the number of burnt electric poles from 700 in 2019 to less than 20 in 2022.

He attributed this achievement to the intensive campaign against bushfires in the region. He assured the public that “pole burning will be a thing of the past in Volta”.

The first quarter of 2023 been promising. Buabin said “a big power station” has been set up at Sokode Gbogame in the Ho Municipality. There are plans to intensify the campaign against illegal connections in the region.
