Jantuah: Government must ban small-scale mining for ten years

The call by Jantuah, a private lawyer, relates to the environmental destruction caused by illegal mining in Ghana, especially to water bodies

Kwame Jantuah, a private legal practitioner, has suggested that the government place a ten-year ban on small-scale mining in Ghana.

His call relates to the destruction being caused by illegal mining, especially to water bodies in some parts of the country.

“If we ban small-scale mining for ten years and put in agricultural structures … we will see true change and recovery,” Jantuah said on The Forum – Asaase 99.5 Accra’s news analysis and current affairs show – as it aired on Saturday (17 September 2022). “We must ban this menace.

“People will argue that we cannot take away life, but these people engaging in galamsey activities are taking away our life and it seems all these people [illegal miners] understand is force.

“Of the visas that we give out, Chinese own the majority. We have about 50,000 Chinese in Ghana. What do they do here? The answer is clear and yet our leaders watch on and do nothing,” Jantuah said.

He wants the president to take drastic action to roll back the prevalence of illegal mining because, he said, some political elements are involved.

“It is clear that there is a huge connection between political party funding and galamsey funding in our country,” Jantuah said. “I want to say categorically that there are people in this current government who are fighting the president over this issue of galamsey. This is why drastic action is essential.”
