The Northern Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has begun investigations into alleged killings of civilians by the military in Bawku in the Upper East Region.
Bawku has seen renewed fighting this month. Two persons have been confirmed dead, and several others injured in a shooting incident that occurred in Bawku in the Upper East Region.
One person died on the spot during the shooting incident that occurred close to the Bawku police station on Wednesday (17 January), while the second person died on Thursday.
Earlier, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) refuted claims that soldiers deployed on Operation Maida Buuri to restore calm have killed three people in Sabongari, a suburb of Bawku.
In an interview with Kwaku Nhyira-Addo on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Wednesday (24 January), Upper East Regional Minister Stephen Yakubu called for calm in the area as REGSEC unravels the cause of death.
“… At REGSEC we are investigating to know the cause. So we have a committee looking into this allegation … You know as a security service they are also trying to bring peace to the area.”
“And if things like this happen, we have to go into it to find out if there were other things that were done outside the law, so we will try and probe what exactly happened,” the minister said.
“This issue has been about three years now and at REGSEC we have met all the stakeholders and also at some point requested that the entire country should pray for Bawku because if there is peace in Bawku it will impact the country,” Yakubu said.
