“Thank you” tour: KNUST student stabbed at NPP event in Kumasi, Regional Minister orders probe

The Ashanti Regional Minister Dr Frank Amoakohene has condemned the stabbing of a university student during the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) “Thank You Tour” at  Bantama in Kumasi, describing the incident as disturbing and unacceptable.

In a statement posted on Facebook Tuesday night, the Minister said he had directed a full-scale investigation into the violence, which left a student of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in critical condition.

“Disturbing reports and images from the NPP ‘Thank You Tour’ have come to my attention,” he wrote.

“I have directed a full investigation into the incident that left a KNUST student critically injured. We urge the NPP leadership to ensure the tour is conducted peacefully to safeguard the security of our beloved region.”

The incident occurred on Tuesday at the Bantama Pentecost Church during a gathering organised by supporters of the former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, as part of the ruling party’s ongoing regional tour.

Eyewitnesses say the victim, a member of the “Jama” group from Unity Hall (Conti) on the KNUST campus, had been hired to energise the event. During the programme, a wealthy associate of Mr Agyapong reportedly offered the group cash—only for a gang of gun-wielding men, believed to be affiliated with the NPP, to intervene and seize the money.

A scuffle ensued, gunshots were fired, and one of the “Jama” group members was stabbed multiple times. He was rushed to the emergency unit of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, where he remains under intensive care.

Kennedy Agyapong’s team has since lodged a formal complaint with the Kumasi Central Police Command. No arrests have been made so far.

The NPP has not yet commented on the incident.
