The leadership of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Tema Central Constituency has called for calm and unity amid rising tensions over the appointment of a new Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the Tema Metropolitan Assembly by President John Dramani Mahama.
This appeal follows a protest on Sunday 13th April 2025 , where scores of youth took to the streets outside the Assembly, demanding that the President nominate a local resident as the next Mayor of Tema.
The demonstrators, visibly agitated, set car tyres ablaze and beat drums in a show of defiance, expressing concerns that a non-local candidate, Ebi Bright, is being considered for the role. Many of the protesters voiced their support instead for Patience Ankamah Addo, who is perceived as a homegrown frontrunner for the position.
In response, the NDC Constituency Executive Committee of Tema Central, led by Benjamin Djakumah, issued a press statement urging restraint and respect for constitutional processes.
“At this critical time in our democratic journey, we call on all political party members, supporters, and the good people of Tema to remain calm, united, and respectful of due process,” said Djakumah, who also serves as Chairman of all Chairmen across Tema East, Tema Central, and Tema West Constituencies.
The Committee emphasised that the authority to appoint a Municipal Chief Executive rests solely with the President and is a constitutional mandate guided by consultations and the national interest.
“We trust in the wisdom and leadership of the President to appoint a competent, visionary, and inclusive leader who will serve the people of Tema with integrity, fairness, and commitment to development,” the statement added.
While acknowledging the passion surrounding local leadership, the party executives cautioned against actions that could incite division or threaten the peace of the city.
“We strongly urge all stakeholders to refrain from actions, statements, or demonstrations that may disrupt the harmony of our beloved city,” the Committee warned.
Hon. Djakumah further noted that regardless of who is ultimately appointed, the people of Tema Central will respect the President’s decision and support the nominee in the interest of peace and progress.
“In view of the above, we wish to state that we, the people of Tema Central, will support any nominee of the President in the interest of peace, unity and development,” he said.
The party’s call for calm comes as national attention turns to President Mahama’s final decision on the MCE appointment, which is expected in the coming days. In the meantime, the NDC in Tema has urged residents to prioritise unity and the collective development of the municipality over personal or factional interests.
