Regional minister: Change of government shouldn’t affect projects

The Upper East Regional Minister said the practice did not only drain government resources but also deprived citizens of development

Stephen Yakubu, the Upper East Regional Minister, has said the practise whereby government projects are abandoned when there is a change of government must stop.

He said successive governments needed to complete old and existing projects before moving on to start new ones.

The minister made the call when he spoke on the back of some stalled projects at Azantilow Senior High Technical School in Sandema during his working visit to the Builsa North Municipality.

Yakubu noted that the practice did not only drain government resources but also deprived citizens of development.

He said, “I personally think that as a country, we shouldn’t be doing this. We should be completing these projects and moving on with others.”

Accommodation challenge

The Azantilow Senior High Technical School faces challenges with inadequate accommodation and classroom space.

The challenges were brought on the school by a windstorm which struck the school last year, peeling off the roofs of dormitories.

The situation has forced the school management to pair students in the remaining, fewer accommodation facilities, resulting in congestion in the dormitories.

A dormitory block near completion which was being constructed as an intervention measure has stalled.
Another classroom block which was awarded during the Atta Mills administration to tackle the challenge with classroom space has also stalled.

The school management said the unavailability of these facilities is affecting the smooth operation of the school.

Tackling challenges

Yakubu who expressed displeasure at the school’s situation has assured that the government would commit itself to completing the stalled projects to benefit the students and ensure smooth academic activities.

He tasked the Assembly to submit details of the projects to his office for the necessary follow up.

Yakubu urged the Assembly and school management to take the responsibility to acquaint themselves with projects that were brought to the school to prevent the abandoning of projects.
