Ursula: Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey to stay in Ghana

Jack Dorsey is expected to relocate to Ghana in June as Twitter sets up its African headquarters in Accra

Jack Dorsey, the co-founder and chief executive officer of Twitter, is expected to move to Ghana in the coming weeks as he prepares to set up the companyā€™s Africa headquarters in Accra.

The Minister of Communications and Digitalisation, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, who confirmed this news on The Asaase Breakfast Show, said the American technology entrepreneur will stay in the country for at least six months.

According to Owusu-Ekuful, the temporary relocation is to enable Dorsey to facilitate other Twitter operations across the continent.

Wooing more investors

Owusu-Ekuful said she is optimistic that the move by the Twitter CEO will help attract other investors into the country.

ā€œJack will be based in Accra, so this will be his base while he visits the other countries on the continent. And I am hoping that his friends would also follow him and see what he finds so special about Accra,ā€ she told the showā€™s co-host, Nana Yaa Mensah.

She added: ā€œAnd they will enjoy it and love it here, so that their businesses will also follow them here.

ā€œBecause when they see the fine country we have, and the very knowledgeable young people, they will be excited about the opportunity and will take advantage of it.ā€

No jobs for the boys

The minister asked young Ghanaians to take advantage of the jobs being offered by the microblogging firm, but added that the Government of Ghana will not influence the companyā€™s employment policy.

“So, it is going to energise this whole space. But go out there and apply. It is not just limited to Ghana alone, so put in your application and you will be able to get there.”

Background

The American microblogging and social networking serviceĀ Twitter announced on Monday 12 April that it has settled on Ghana to establish its Africa headquarters.

According to Twitter, it choseĀ Ghana because, ā€œas a champion for democracy, Ghana is a supporter of free speech, online freedom and the Open Internet, of which Twitter is also an advocateā€.

It added: ā€œFurthermore, Ghanaā€™s recent appointment to host the secretariat of the African Continental Free Trade Area aligns with our overarching goal to establish a presence in the region that will support our efforts to improve and tailor our service across Africa.ā€
