Samira Bawumia donates books to five basic schools

SEHP, under the Office of the Second Lady, Samira Bawumia, donated books to schools to help students cultivate the habit of reading

The Samira Empowerment and Humanitarian Projects (SEHP) has donated reading materials to basic schools in the New Juaben North and South municipalities in the Eastern Region.

SEHP, under the Office of the Second Lady, Samira Bawumia, donated these books with the objective of promoting the culture of reading, literacy, and advancing critical thinking among children in basic schools.

This initiative is known as the Library- In-A- Box , which provides books in boxes to basic schools across Ghana. The Oyoko Methodist Basic, Trinity Presby Royal Basic, Apempoa Islamic Basic, and the Police Basic School were the beneficiaries of the recent donations.

At the event, Samira Bawumia advised students to make good use of their time by reading, which will contribute to academic excellence. As a result, she reminded and identified ways for all teachers to assist students in achieving this success.

“Children should treasure good books and read them as often as possible as a constructive way to spend their time. I believe that cultivating a habit of reading is important and will serve as a springboard for our children to excel,” she said.

“To our head teachers here today, I say, you play the most important role in setting the tone and strategy for your school.

“I think you all understand that it takes the entire school, from the head teacher down to the student, to help children learn and love reading, so everyone from the head teacher down to the pupil must support this effort,” Bawumia added.

“There are diverse ways in which you can do this, such as by allotting reading periods on your timetable to get older people reading to the younger ones, inviting community leaders to talk about how important reading has been in their lives, and most importantly, helping to read to our children.”

The director of education for New Juaben North and South municipal, Mustapha Haruna, expressed appreciation for the second lady’s effort and assured that he would commit himself to the realisation of this goal.

“I’ll make sure the kids read and read and read well,” he said.

“Being the senior brother and then the director of education for north and south I will make sure in person, go to school to school and check the children reading the books that, you have given us, we thank you,” Haruna added.

The Samira Empowerment and Humanitarian Projects is a non-profit organisation established with the purpose of empowering the underprivileged through diverse social interventions like health, education, and woman empowerment for better lives in Ghana.
