Massive job cuts at major tech companies have become almost routine, but the reasons executives give for workforce reductions have shifted sharply in 2026.
Instead of citing efficiency, over-hiring, or bloated management structures, tech leaders now point to artificial intelligence (AI) as the driving factor behind their decisions.
In recent weeks, giants including Google, Amazon, Meta, and smaller firms like Pinterest and Atlassian have all announced or warned of workforce reductions, attributing the changes to AI innovations enabling them to do more with fewer employees.
“I think that 2026 is going to be the year that AI starts to dramatically change the way that we work,” Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in January.
Since then, Meta — owner of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp — has laid off hundreds of staff, including 700 just last week.
Despite the cuts, the company plans to nearly double its AI spending this year and continues to hire in “priority areas,” a Meta spokesperson confirmed.
However, a hiring freeze remains in place across several parts of the company, and further layoffs are expected in the coming months, according to insiders speaking to the BBC.
The trend signals a growing reliance on AI in tech operations and highlights how automation is increasingly shaping workforce decisions across Silicon Valley.
