Ghana unveils first international-standard rugby stadium in West Africa

The University of Ghana Rugby Stadium will be the venue for the rugby event at the 13th African Games

The University of Ghana (UG) Rugby Stadium has officially opened its doors. Inaugurated on Friday (15 March), the stadium serves as the first international-standard rugby facility in West Africa, adhering to World Rugby guidelines and regulations.

Previously, Rugby Africa, the governing body for the sport on the continent, faced hurdles in securing suitable venues for international rugby events.

The UG Rugby Stadium not only addresses this issue but also signifies a bold step towards fostering rugby’s growth across Africa. Beyond hosting international competitions, the facility will serve as the primary home for the Ghana Rugby Federation.

Stakeholders from various sectors have joined forces since 2021 to make this vision a reality. Government officials, the Ghanaian community, and the Ghana Rugby Federation all played vital roles in ensuring the project’s completion in time for the ongoing 13th African Games (8–23 March), where rugby will debut at the continental showpiece from 18–21 March.

“We are immensely proud of the inauguration of the Rugby Stadium,” declared Herbert Mensah, president of Rugby Africa.

“This state-of-the-art facility not only elevates the standard of rugby infrastructure in the region but also symbolises our collective commitment to the growth and development of the sport. Ultimately, allowing us to create an opportunity of upward mobility within our competition structures,” he said.

Mensah also expressed his deepest gratitude to all those involved, highlighting their unwavering support and dedication to shaping the future of African rugby.

“I extend my deepest gratitude to all involved for their unwavering support and dedication. Together, we are shaping the future of rugby in Africa.”
