Takoradi “pregnant woman” to police: I wanted to please my husband

Josephine Panyin Mensah (Simons) is currently in police cells for faking her pregnancy and kidnapping in the Western Region

The police have disclosed that Josephine Panyin Mensah (Simons), the 28-year-old woman at the centre of a supposed full-term pregnancy and kidnapping, has said she invented the whole story to “satisfy” her husband.

The story of Josephine Mensah went viral after it was reported last week that she had gone missing in Takoradi while out on a morning walk. She was said to be nine months pregnant.

She was later found in Axim all in the Western Region.

In his first interviews on the matter, the Western Regional Minister, Kwamena Okyere Darko-Mensah, said the whole story was a hoax.

The police subsequently confirmed this and arrested the woman on Friday (24 September) after two medical tests proved she had never been pregnant.

Speaking to Asaase News’s Beatrice Adu on Saturday (25 September), the acting director of public affairs for the Ghana Police Service, ACP Kwesi Ofori, said law-enforcement officers would respect the law even as the suspect stays behind bars.

“She said it was her own plans and machinations,” ACP Ofori said.

He added: “She’s behind bars and has been cautioned before an independent witness. According to her, it was a family issue and [she] just wanted to satisfy her husband.

“We’ll respect the provisions of the law.”
