Tailors’ section of Kejetia Market gutted in early morning fire
No lockable shops were affected, but the Ghana National Fire Service responded swiftly to a distress call from their patrol team to contain the blaze

A fire broke out at the Kejetia Market in Kumasi during the early hours of Saturday, gutting parts of the second floor known to house tailors and accessories vendors, Asaase News has gathered.
No lockable shops were affected, but the Ghana National Fire Service responded swiftly to a distress call from their patrol team to contain the blaze.
According to Nana Kwasi Prempeh, President of the Federation of Petty Traders at the Kejetia Market, preliminary accounts from the scene suggest the fire may have started after power was restored to an electric iron that had been left plugged in during an earlier outage.
“The Fire Service hasn’t officially confirmed the cause yet,” he told Asaase News. “But our independent sources say there was a blackout yesterday. One of the tailors allegedly left an iron on, and when power returned later in the night, it may have overheated and triggered the fire.”
This marks the fourth fire incident at the market in the last four months, sparking fear and concern among traders.
“We are all apprehensive,” Nana Kwasi Prempeh added. “It’s becoming too frequent and scary.”
In response, market management has summoned leaders of the traders’ associations for an emergency meeting aimed at strengthening safety protocols and preventing further occurrences.
Investigations into the exact cause of the fire are ongoing. There were no immediate reports of injuries.
