Upper East Region: 13 contacts of monkeypox case identified for follow-up

On 23 July 2022, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the Monkeypox disease a global Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC)

Health authorities in the Upper East Region say contact follow-up and monitoring have begun for 13 persons who have come into contact with a confirmed case of Monkeypox.

The Monkeypox disease is a viral disease transmitted to humans through close contact with an infected person, animal or material contaminated with the virus.

The region recorded its first confirmed case of the viral disease on 22 July at the Upper East Regional hospital. The case was one of three suspected cases being investigated.

In a release, the regional health directorate stated that the confirmed case exhibited a history of fever and skin rash before dying on 26 July 2022.

The directorate said additional cases of the disease were yet to be confirmed.

It said following the outbreak, several measures have been instituted in the region to contain the further spread of the disease. Topmost among the measures is the stepping up of surveillance on the Monkeypox disease in all health facilities and communities and intensified awareness creation and social mobilization on Monkeypox.

The health directorate urged the public to remain calm and protect themselves against the disease.

On Saturday, 23 July 2022 the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the Monkeypox disease a global Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).

The classification is the highest alert that the WHO can issue and follows a worldwide upsurge in cases.
