Takoradi: GHC10,000 bounty put on killers of Switzerland-based businessman

The police are promising a reward of GHC10,000 for anyone volunteering credible information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects

The police have placed a GHC10,000 bounty on six armed men who shot and killed a Switzerland-based businessman in broad daylight in Takoradi in the Western Region on Monday.

A statement issued by the Western Regional Police Command appealed to the public to volunteer credible information on the incident.

It further assured members of the public of confidentiality, adding that the Western Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has put sufficient measures in place to maintain law and order in the metropolis.

Background

Charles Kwakye, 61, was shot in his car on Monday by suspected robbers while in the company of his wife, after withdrawing money at a bank.

He died the following day (13 April) from gunshot wounds, health officials at the Takoradi Government Hospital confirmed.

Investigations show that the dead man had returned to Ghana from Switzerland to monitor his ongoing building projects in Takoradi.

Attack by six robbers

Kwakye was moving around town in a Hyundai Sonata with the registration number GE 4022-16. He had gone to Amanful to buy building materials when he was accosted by six armed men.

“Whilst in their Hyundai Sonata private vehicle parked at Amanful, [Kwakye and his wife] were accosted and attacked by six armed men on motorbikes.

“One of them got hold of their travelling bag containing a cash sum of CFA6,000, €50, 80 Swiss francs and GHC12,700,” a police statement said.

According to the police, Kwakye struggled with the armed men, who shot then shot him and fled.

No arrests have since been made.
