Reggae finds a new home as Asaase welcomes Lagazee

“Asaase is now the home and headquarters of reggae dancehall and sound system culture,” Lagazee posted on Facebook.

For many reggae music lovers in Ghana, Lagazee is no stranger.

With over two decades of experience in the media space, King Lagazee, as he is popularly known, has carved a unique identity as an excellent radio and TV personality, DJ and sound system selector with a burning passion for the Jamaican reggae and dancehall music culture.

Born Isaac Ago Tetteh Monney, the son of Accra is now a voice of our land. A fruit does not fall far from the tree it is said, so it comes as no surprise as Lagazee recalls growing up with his father playing songs from the likes of Peter Tosh, Jimmy Cliff, Bob Marley, and Ghana’s Roots Anabo [a reggae band] from his hometown.

“I have loved the reggae and dancehall vibes since I was young because of my father but I think my love for these genres escalated when Steve Allen visited Ghana from the UK in the 90s and introduced me to Bass Odyssey sound videos on JVC cassette,” he tells Asaase Entertainment.

Having spent the last eight years of his career as host of a reggae show with the same name on Hitz 103.9 FM in Accra, King Lagazee steps into a journey as host of Asaase Radio’s YAAD SETTINGZ, a new 100% reggae and dancehall programme that captures the true spirit of Jamaica and brings home to Africa, the sounds that have inspired generations of new music genres.

“Asaase is now the home and headquarters of reggae dancehall and sound system culture,” he posted on Facebook.

“We want Asaase to reflect our core mission to be a voice for the diverse audience we cater to, the Jamaican community in Ghana is very large and Ghanaians love reggae and dancehall, YAAD SETTINGZ will speak to that audience. We are already Ghana’s number 1 English station nationwide and we are here to serve everybody and choosing Lagazee falls in line with our mission,” Nana Otu-Gyandoh, head of programming at Asaase Radio said.

This is a culmination of a long journey for Lagazee who has spent the last 21 years climbing up the ladder of radio excellence.

YAAD SETTINGZ will air on Asaase 99.5 Accra, 100.3Mhz in Cape Coast, 98.5Mhz in Kumasi and 99.7Mhz in Tamale on Saturdays from 4am to 7am as zion express, Sundays 12pm to 3pm and on Wednesdays from 8pm to 10pm as Nitro reggae.

For his very first show which starts this Sunday 21 August 2022, Lagazee hosts reggae icon and ‘always on my mind’ hit maker Da’Ville who after becoming born-again and taking a break from music is set to release his first album in ten years.
