EC corrects error in total votes cast in the presidential election

The Electoral Commission (EC) says it mistakenly stated the number of total valid votes cast as 13,433,573 instead of 13,119, 460

The Electoral Commission has corrected an error in the figures of the total valid votes cast in the just-ended presidential and parliamentary elections.

The correction comes barely a day after the official declaration of results on Wednesday (9 December) by the EC chair, Jean Mensa. which led to the re-election of President Akufo-Addo for a second term.

In a statement, the EC said: “The chairperson of the Electoral Commission inadvertently used 13,433,573 as the total valid votes cast. The total valid votes cast is 13,119,460.”

However, the statement said the change to the figure does not affect the percentage polled by President Akufo-Addo and his main opponent, John Mahama of the National Democratic Congress.

“This does not change the percentages stated for each candidate and the declaration made by the chairperson,” the statement said.

Below is the full statement.
