Residents of Guan district: We need a representative in parliament

Since its creation in 2019, the Guan district has not had a constituency, thus, no member of parliament

The chiefs and people of the Guan district in the Oti Region have appealed to the president and the Electoral Commission (EC) to create a constituency in the district to enable them to have a representation in parliament.

Since its creation in 2019, the Guan district has not had a constituency, thus, no member of parliament.

In 2020, the EC did not hold elections in the area for registered voters because there was no constituency there. The district comprises areas such as Santrokofi, Akpafu, Likpe and Lolobi with its district capital at Likpe Mate.

Speaking to Asaase News, Nana Kofi Ollator IV (Kyedomhene of Santrokofi Traditional Area), said the district is not developing because it does not have a member of parliament to present their views and needs.

He emphasised the need for the EC to present the constitutional instrument needed to create the constituency to parliament for review and approval.

He added that many developmental projects that could have benefited the district have been missed because they do not have representation in parliament, thus have no access to the district assemblies’ common fund needed to fund local development projects.

He complained of his limited power as a chief. He said, many appeals for development projects have been made to the district chief executive but yielded no positive result.

Nana Ollator IV said “on behalf of the chiefs and people of the Guan District in the Oti Region, we are appealing to the government and the Electoral Commission to create a constituency for us so that come 2024, we can also vote and have a representative in the parliament”
