Ghana’s beach volleyball dream run ends in African Games quarterfinals

Morocco and Mozambique crash Ghana's men's and women's volleyball dreams of a podium finish

Ghana’s beach volleyball teams, both men and women, had their dreams of 13th African Games glory dashed in the quarterfinals on Wednesday (13 March), at Laboma Beach Resort.

The men’s team, featuring Edward Ajanako and Paul Akan, began their quest for a medal on Monday (11 March) against Togo’s Kuamivi Achille Samani and Koffi Abraham Kotoka.

Ajanako and Akan displayed grit, winning a close 2-1 encounter. They continued their momentum, defeating Senegal’s Babacar Samb and Mohamadou Diallo 2-1 on the same day. Their final group stage challenge came against Benin’s Messan Maxwell Tobby, Nick Tohouegnon, and Abdel Hamid Paparape. Ajanako and Akan dominated, winning 2-0 to secure a spot in the knockout rounds.

A tougher test awaited them in the Round of 12. Algeria’s Mohamed-Islem Kallouche and Omar Benfetima pushed Ghana, but Ajanako and Akan prevailed 2-1.

They advanced to the quarterfinals, where their opponents were Morocco’s Soufiane El Gharouti and Mohammed Abicha. Unfortunately, the dream run ended there. Morocco emerged victorious 2-0, leaving Ghana just short of a podium finish.

The women’s beach volleyball team, Juliana Aryee and Charity Torku, mirrored the men’s success, reaching the quarterfinals. After overcoming The Gambia (2-1) and Burkina Faso (2-0) in the group stages, their journey ended against a strong Mozambique duo—Vanessa Muianga and Ana Paula Sinaportar. Mozambique dominated the match, winning 2-0.
