Mustapha Ussif: Abysmal performance of Black Stars due to poor technical team

Ghana suffered a humiliating group-stage exit at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations after the four-time champions were beaten 3-2 by debutants Comoros

Mustapha Ussif, Minister of Youth and Sports has attributed the abysmal performance of the Black Stars in the ongoing African Cup of Nations to the failure of the technical team to manage Ghana’s games well.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Wednesday (26 January), the minister indicated that the government has put measures in place including the formation of a special committee to improve upon sports administration in the country.

Ussif said the players are capable of winning the upcoming World Cup qualifiers but need a competent technical team to do so.

He said: “Ghana had good players from good teams abroad. Normally, every team will have a technical team as well to read and manage games. And we believe that in this AFCON campaign, the technical team did not manage the games well for our dear country. And it is as a result of that Mr Speaker, that the ministry asked the GFA to review and look at the various teams that form the Black Stars.”

“…Mr Speaker, the government is also putting efforts into providing sports infrastructure so that we’ll be able to develop sports in the various levels across the country. The government and its agencies only have provided 87 Astroturf across the country. There are also ten youth resources centres that the government is constructing in the then ten regions of which they’re in their various stage of completion,” he stated.

Coach Milovan Rajevac was sacked as Ghana coach following the Black Stars’ disastrous showing at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations.

It comes barely a week after Ghana suffered a humiliating group-stage exit at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations after the four-time champions were beaten 3-2 by debutants Comoros.

The Ministry of Youth and Sports in an emergency meeting with the Ghana Football Association asked the GFA to review the work of coach Milovan and his entire technical team.

Kojo Addae-Mensah, a sports analyst has said Black Stars coach Milovan Rajevac has failed to live up to expectations following a humiliating group-stage exit in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon on Tuesday (18 January).

Debutants Comoros beat the four-time champions by a 3-2 scoreline to record their maiden victory in the continental showpiece.

Speaking to Kwaku Nhyira-Addo on The Asaase Breakfast Show Wednesday (19 January), Addae-Mensah said the coach and the entire technical team must be sacked.

“He (Milovan Rajevac) should go, and not only him, but the entire technical team should also go. He has no business even sitting on the bench playing the World Cup qualifier.

“And the arrogance with which Benedict Owusu [Asaase Radio’s correspondent at the tournament] is telling us he answered those questions at the press conference I am sorry to say Nhyira-Addo on your show, it pisses me off big time. He has absolutely no business being on the bench for the World Cup qualifier.”

Meanwhile, Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu said the Minister of Youth and Sports does not have the power to dismiss the coach of the national team.
