Koforidua-Bunso road under rehabilitation

Routine maintenance works have commenced on the 34-km Koforidua-Bunso Road. The road serves as an important link for travellers from parts of the Eastern and Greater Accra regions to the Ashanti Region and beyond.

The deplorable nature of the corridor currently, particularly the numerous potholes on it, has become a headache for motorists.

Two local contractors, Kasmo Company Limited and Argate Limited, have been engaged by the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) to carry out maintenance works.

According to the Eastern Regional Director of the GHA, Mr Ernest Arthur, Kasmo has been awarded a one-year contract to seal all existing potholes on the stretch, and even those that may emerge within the contract year.

Argate, on the other hand, has been engaged to carry out immediate regravelling of sections of the road over a period of three months, Mr Arthur stated.

He said the maintenance works stretched from the Oyoko Roundabout, near Koforidua, to Bunso.
Background

The Koforidua-Bunso road was constructed in the 1970s. In the 1990s, under the Highway Sector Improvement Project (HSIP) rolled out at the time to recondition the country’s highways, a number of rehabilitation works were carried out on it.

Since then, Mr Arthur said, there had been no major rehabilitation works carried out on the Koforidua-Bonsu Road.

He explained, however, that even though the contract for the road to be rehabilitated was awarded in 2008, it was terminated in June this year due to non-performance on the part of the contractor involved.
