We expect external financing assurances soon, says Ofori-Atta

Ghana secured a staff-level agreement through the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in December last year for a US$3 billion loan

Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has said that Ghana’s delegation to China has had positive and encouraging meetings with its Chinese counterparts.

Ofori-Atta said Ghana is looking forward to securing external financing assurances very soon; a move that will help to fast-track the country’s quest to secure support from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Ghana secured a staff-level agreement for a US$3 billion loan through the IMF in December last year but must first ask bilateral lenders to provide financing assurances on existing debts before the IMF board can sign off on the programme.

“So far had very positive and encouraging meetings in China! Looking forward to securing external assurances very soon, even as we pass our outstanding domestic revenue bills back home. Great progress on all fronts,” the minister said in a tweet.

“I am trusting that Ghana’s experience under the common framework will be different and will signal progress towards a more credible framework for debt treatment,” the tweet added.
