Ga traditional council: Ban on church noise still in force

The statement said the ban on drumming and noise making has been an annual observance from time immemorial and this year should not be an exception

The Ga traditional council, on Wednesday, reiterated that the use of public address systems by churches and other institutions violates the ban on drumming and noisemaking.

The Ga Mantse, Nii Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, said the Ga Traditional Council has not endorsed the use of microphones and public address systems by the clergy or any other institution at reduced volumes.

A statement from the traditional council, signed by the Ga Mantse in Accra, said although the Ministry of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs set out to give details about the ban on drumming and noisemaking, it was misleading to say that churches can use public address systems at reduced volumes during worship.

The statement said the ban on drumming and noise making has been an annual observance from time immemorial and this year should not be an exception.

“This is our custom. Customary law is part of the laws of Ghana and must be observed appropriately,” it said. It urged the public to continue to adhere to the ban on noise making.

The ministry issued a statement on 15 May to clarify the traditional council’s statement. It said the clergy could use microphones at reduced volumes in churches and auditoriums.

It also said clapping of hands at minimum levels is allowed in church auditoriums only.

The statement, however, entreated all to abide by the customs and traditions of the Ga Traditional Area and other areas under its jurisdiction.
