Edith Dankwa: I entered media space by accident

The chairperson of the Business and Financial Times says she is naturally a shy person and never thought she could end up working in the media

  • "You have to go the extra mile to get people to appreciate what you do and to let them understand the value you bring to the table.”

Dr Edith Dankwa, an entrepreneur, consultant and chairperson of the Business and Financial Times Limited says she entered the space in Ghana by accident.

Speaking with Nana Yaa Mensah on Sunday Night, Dr Dankwa said, “Growing up it never crossed my mind that I would get into the media space. Because media is like you get involved and you are out there, I’m not that type. That’s why sometimes you hear about the name but you can’t see the face.”

“I always like working behind the scenes and making things happen. It’s the nature of the work that has pushed me out there. I’m not the outgoing type and so finding myself in the media; it wasn’t planned but my nature is that whatever I set my mind up to do I make sure I’m excelling.”

Magic wand

Dr Dankwa said it was quite difficult having to start the Business and Financial Times newspaper because people were used to the national newspapers, adding, “Starting a new business is always difficult; you have to go the extra mile to get people to appreciate what you do and to let them understand the value you bring to the table.”

She said, “…it was very difficult but the fact is that getting results and challenging yourself was the big thing and working with young people and motivating them to go out there to make the difference was the whole thing.

“But at the end of the day, we broke through. The difference is how to convince people and that’s about selling your products…”

Dr Dankwa was recently adjudged the Marketing Woman of the Year 2020 by the Chartered Institute of Marketing Ghana (CIMG), with her media organisation also gaining recognition as the Digital Media Organisation of the year.

Arguably the most coveted recognition any woman business leader can earn in the country, the organisers bestowed on her the distinguished award for the role she has played in making the Business and Financial Times (B&FT) newspaper Ghana’s most credible and leading source of business information over the past three decades.
