Nine teachers selected for pipefitting training at NAIT, Canada

Nine teachers drawn from technical universities in Ghana have been selected by the Petroleum Commission with the support and approval of the Energy Ministry to undergo specialized training at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology, NAIT – Edmonton, Canada, to become certified instructors for pipefitting in Ghana.

The training of the selected teachers is part of the accelerated oil and gas capacity building programme (AOGC) initiative of the Petroleum Commission, aimed at developing Ghana into a petroleum hub. 

The selected teachers are expected to commence the twelve-months programme from November 2020 to November 2021.

The Ministry of Energy in a letter dated 7 October 2020, approved the request of the Petroleum Commission. 

In its letter, the Ministry said it is “pleased with the initiative taken by the Accelerated Oil and Gas Capacity Building Programme to build the capacity of Ghanaian tutors as certified instructors for pipe fitting in Ghana”.

The AOGC was established in November 2017 with the intent to enhance the capacity of Ghanaians to enable them to work in the oil and gas sector. 

The programme will be in effect for five years and aims to train individuals in various technical and vocational areas, build the capacity of educational institutions to be able to train students and provide internationally recognized training certificates and also provide business and management training for SMEs. 

About AOGC

The programme is to ensure the creation of jobs and professional integration pathways, facilitate capacity building of educational and training institutes, invest in education and skills enhancement. 

It is to minimize the cost of training, localize training, improve quality of education/training, empower local companies to actively participate in the oil and gas industry. 

The programme is also to train Ghanaians in high job-creating sectors (welding, pipe fitting, fabrication and installation, etc.) and to encourage women’s participation in the AOGC.
