Eddie Murphy’s ‘Coming 2 America’ movie is offensive, says Leila Djansi
The American-Ghanaian filmmaker believes the movie does not portray the true picture of Africa
Eddie Murphy’s comedy movie ‘Coming 2 America’ continues to receive global backlash shortly after the official release.
The latest to criticise the comedy movie is American-Ghanaian filmmaker Leila Djansi who has described it as “offensive”.
Djansi who appears not to be enthused about Eddie Murphy’s new movie is also questioning attempt to portray Africa in a bad light in the movie.
“As an African, I found #Coming2America mildly offensive. Jungles, wild animals, child warriors and war. Come on Hollywood, these tropes show how discriminatory and disrespectful y’all are. Enough! There’s more to Africa and please don’t try hiding em within wealth.,” she wrote on Facebook.
Djansi added: “I don’t understand this unwillingness to change and accept that these images and ideas are wrong, mostly lies. Spent 15 years of my life in Ghana and never even seen a squirrel. Child soldiers? Chicago gun totting gang kids? Can we talk about that? STOP!!
“Africans are regular people. African cities are cosmopolitan. African villages are what they are based on culture and geography. Let’s not discuss villages in the South. Georgia? I swear someone will be asking me about lions this week. Jesus take the wheel.”

Coming 2 America is a 2021 American comedy film that serves as a sequel to the original 1988 film starring Eddie Murphy. The film is directed by Craig Brewer from a screenplay by Kenya Barris, Barry W. Blaustein, and David Sheffield, and a story by Blaustein, Sheffield, and Justin Kanew, based on characters created by Murphy. It is the second installment in the Coming to America film series, and stars Murphy, Arsenio Hall, Jermaine Fowler, Leslie Jones, Tracy Morgan, KiKi Layne, Shari Headley, Teyana Taylor, Wesley Snipes, and James Earl Jones.
Originally to be theatrically released by Paramount Pictures, the film’s distribution rights were sold to Amazon Studios due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
