Kennedy Agyapong: I’ve no plans of becoming Bawumia’s running mate

The MP for Assin Central says he could not be a vice-president because he would speak his mind and that may undermine his boss

TheĀ MP for Assin CentralĀ in the Central Region, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, says he will not accept any offer to partner with the 2024 presidential candidate of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mahamudu Bawumia in the December elections.

In the NPP presidential primary held late last year, Vice-President Bawumia obtained 118,210 votes, or 61.47% of the total valid vote cast,Ā beating his main contender, Agyapong, who obtained 71,996 votes, representing 37.41% of the votes.

BawumiaĀ is yet to officially announce his running mate after he was granted an extension for the selection in December.

Speaking on the KSM Show on Accra-based Pan African Television on Friday (23 February), Agyapong said “I wouldn’t do it, I just want to allow him to do whatever he wants to do. I don’t want to be vice. What am I going to say.”

“I believe in democracy so, I want it to work. I will stay back and watch and whatever I have to do, I will do to contribute,” he said.

“But I won’t accept vice as if at all cost Kennedy Agyapong has to be among the leaders. One thing I have always said is that you don’t need to be president to effect change in people’s lives. I have businesses that have employed many Ghanaians and put food on their table and it’s self-gratifying,” Agyapong

I will speak my mind

Agyapong further explained that he could not be a vice-president because he would speak his mind and that may undermine his boss

“To tell you the truth, I can’t be vice president because I will speak my mind, and am not going to be mate and in Ghana if you speak your mind, you will be branded…”
