Navrongo: Commercial motor tricycle drivers fix ‘potholes’ on a major road

The drivers say rampant accidents caused by the bad road in the area led them to come together to fix the potholes

Commercial motor tricycle drivers, popularly known as “Can Do drivers” in Navrongo on Sunday (15 May) packed their tricycles and directed their energies towards fixing potholes on the Pungu road – one of the major roads in the Kassena-Nankana municipality.

The drivers worked in unison to fix defects on the road – mainly potholes using red gravels.

Working in three groups; fetching water, and red gravel and operating a compressing machine, the drivers fixed the potholes right from the Pungu junction off the Navrongo-Bolgatanga road to Pungu Central.

The drivers undertook the work with money from their own pockets and with help from other notable individuals in the municipality.

Motor accidents on the Pungu road have increased over the past six months, with victims the majority of whom are young people losing their lives.

The drivers said the issue of accidents on the road was becoming worrisome, adding the poor nature of the road was a contributory factor.

The selfless act of the drivers is intended to reduce accidents on the road and make movement smooth.

Their act has won them wide commendation and applause from residents and road users.

The leader of the drivers, Keriga Bawole, told Asaase News concerns over rampant accidents caused by the bad road birthed their idea to fix the potholes.

He said the poor state of the road was also damaging their tricycles, making them spend hugely on repairs.

While Keriga wants other communities to learn from their exemplary service, he has urged local authorities to prioritise road construction to curb accidents and also open up the area to development.

“We are happy that we have been able to do this to help the community and we hope other communities will copy what we have done today. We don’t have to always wait for the government or the politicians to do things for us.”
“We must also do things on our own. But as we are trying, the municipal assembly and government should also construct good roads for us so that it can bring development to Navrongo.” Keriga added.
