As Ghanaians prepare to select a president and MPs in the 7 December election, the spotlight is falling increasingly on female leaders – women who continue to stamp their name in history with their contribution to Ghana. And Rosemond Obeng, the deputy national co-ordinator of TESCON, is one such woman making an impact on the lives of Ghanaian women.
She is a political, social and women’s empowerment activist.
Go-getting girlhood
Rosemond, a career-oriented girl, had her early education at the Seven Great Princes Academy in Accra and then pursued her secondary education at Mfantsiman Girls’ Secondary School in the Central Region.
After years of dedication and hard work in her quest to obtain a higher education, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in social work at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi.
She went on to pursue a postgraduate degree in management and administration at the University of Ghana Business School.
During her student years, she gained attention through her work and was named a deputy national co-ordinator of TESCON, the student organisation of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), in 2018.
Admirers showered Rosemond with accolades as loved ones took to social media to share in her glory.
Show of power
Through her work as an activist campaigning for women’s empowerment, Rosemond Obeng is helping to highlight initiatives that particularly empower girls.
Speaking as a woman who is politically active, she says she believes that the Akufo-Addo-led government has done more for women than any other government in the history of the Fourth Republic.
Today (Saturday 17 October), she will première her programme Interact With People’s Mother, which will serve as a platform to promote women’s well-being even further.
“I believe it is in lieu of this that the past year was declared a ‘year of amplification’. Interact With People’s Mother … aims to highlight progress made in the empowerment of women in Ghana, and other issues that concern them,” Rosemond said in a recent Facebook post.
She says the programme will “discuss, digest and explore women’s empowerment initiatives contributing to uplifting Ghanaian women”. She believes the show will also deflate misconceptions that the ultimate achievement of the women’s empowerment movement is appointing a woman as the vice-presidential candidate of a major political party.
She argues that women should be given a place at the table where decisions are taken, but, even more importantly, that initiatives and programmes by the NPP government which uplift women must also be projected.

About TESCON
The Tertiary Students Confederacy (TESCON) is the students’ wing of the NPP. It plays certain distinct roles, including serving as a watchdog for the governing party.
TESCON was inaugurated on 8 January 2000 in the courtyard of Independence Hall at KNUST in Kumasi.
Its founding leader was Francis Asenso-Boakye, now the NPP’s parliamentary candidate for Bantama in the Ashanti Region.
