Shifting Stale Relationships: Ask for help

It was a Saturday morning and I headed off on my bike with my bucket and sponge balanced on the handle bars. As a schoolboy I had started a modest car washing business, and it sure beat having a paper round and getting up at the crack of dawn seven days a week like the rest of my class mates.

Shifting Stale RelationshipsThe guy whose car I washed asked what I was going to do when I left school. I explained that I didn’t know yet. He asked if it would help to apply for an apprenticeship with his business, I jumped at the opportunity. He helped me complete the application. He provided a reference. He helped me prepare for interview. And… I got a job! He continued to help me over the years by sponsoring me within the organisation. I wouldn’t have got my first (and only ever) job without his help. Whatever our stage of life we all benefit from the help of others.

The offer of help

There’s an entrepreneur I know who when I met him seemed to have everything. But he lacked a sense of what to do with his life. So I met with him on a regular basis, coached him and helped him develop a sense of purpose. Take time to get to know other people’s aims, aspirations and goals, then offer to help them achieve them.

Sign post to help

Leaders are always looking to work smarter, and to make life more simple and easy to manage. As you discover cutting edge smart phone apps, sources of knowledge or online services that you think are life- changing, point others towards them, especially if they save time or money.

The request for help

We can also ask for help from others. However, I would advise you to choose something that will be seen as no big deal to the person you are asking. They will feel great for helping you in a way that costs them little, and their little may be a lot to you.

Each of these “helps” will strengthen and enrich your relationships.

Offer help to people and occasionally ask for help yourself.

ACTION:

Who do you know who needs your help right now? Give it to them, without reservation.
