Emmanuel Appoh: Accra not the most polluted city in the world

A former acting director of the air quality unit of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Emmanuel Appoh has refuted claims that Accra is the most polluted city in the world.

It follows recent reports in a cross-section of the media that Accra is one of the most polluted cities in the world.

Speaking at a recent one-day training for journalists in Accra on Air Quality Policy in Ghana and Regulations, Appoh said the report is false.

“Some people use what we call the low-cost sensors to monitor the air quality. The low-cost sensors are inaccurate and they tend to have some integrity bias, so normally they need to be corrected before you can use them.”

“So what happened last February was that there was an influx of dust from the Sahara through Chad, that gas was suspended for some time in the atmosphere and the atmosphere was a bit hazy and therefore affected visibility.”

“The records or regulatory gauge were recording something different but people with inaccurate sensors that the values are high, but meanwhile we that were receiving the Sahara dust had values that were even lower than India … so it wasn’t true,” Appoh said.
