African Games 2023: Five Ghanaian boxers in contention for gold medal

Ghana entered 16 representatives, but nine could not reach the medal zone

The national Boxing team gave fans something to cheer about at the packed Bukom Boxing Arena on Thursday night when four boxers fought their way to the finals of the on going 13th African Games.

Ghana entered 16 representatives, but nine could not reach the medal zone.

The 2020 Olympics medalist Samuel Takyi had a majority decision win over John Paul Masamba in Thursday’s semifinal.

Abubakar Kamoko, son of Braimah Kamoko (Bukom Banku), is also on course for a gold medal after he qualified to the men’s Cruiserweight final after a split decision win against Nathan Mbeli Nlandu.

Kamoko is now guaranteed to improve on his father’s bronze medal from the African Games in 1999, Johannesburg.

The other winners include;  Mohammed Aryeetey (Minimumweight -48Kg), Amadu Mohammed (Bantamweight -54Kg) and Joseph Commey (Lightweight -60Kg).

The performance and grading of the medal hopefuls will certainly improve Ghana’s standing on the medals table.
