Damongo: Passing of Yagbonwura is a personal loss to me, says Bawumia

At the 12th day prayers (Adua) for the late king on Thursday 2 March, Bawumia said the Yagbowura took him as his son

The vice president, Mahamudu Bawumia, said the passing of the late king of the Gonja kingdom, Yagbonwura Sulemana Tuntumba Bore-Esa I, is a personal loss to him.

At the 12th day prayers (Adua) for the late king on Thursday 2 March, Bawumia said the Yagbowura took him as his son.

“He was a source of very wise council. His passing is not only a loss to Gonjaland, it is a personal loss to me.

“I’m here in Damongo today to pay my respects to my father, because if they do my father’s funeral and I don’t appear, I will not be able to sleep at night,” he said.

The vice president noted that he was in Damongo to mourn with the people of Gonjaland. He urged them to continue to pray for the late king. He eulogised Sumaila Ndewura Jakpa for founding the Gonja kingdom in the 17th century and instituting a succession plan that has led to peaceful transition of leadership over the years.

“Now we all know that Tulwewura is going to be next in succession. There is no issue about that. It is not the case in so many places in terms of who is next in succession,” Bawumia added.

Yagbonwura Bore-Esa I, who ruled for 13 years, passed on Sunday 5 February at 90 years.

The new Yagbonwura will be enskinned on 20 March at Nyange, the traditional home of Gonjaland. This will be done through consultations with the chiefs and traditional leaders after the 12th day Adua in Damongo.
