Ablakwa: Bulgaria ready to enroll Ghanaian students from Ukraine

The North Tongu MP Samuel Ablakwa says about 150 Ghanaian students who successfully escaped from Ukraine are currently being hosted in Romania

Bulgaria has offered to assist Ghanaian students who fled war-hit Ukraine to complete their studies in some universities in the Balkan nation, the MP for North Tongu Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa told Asaase Radio on Thursday.

Ablakwa said about 150 Ghanaian students who successfully escaped from Ukraine are currently being hosted in Romania.

Speaking to Kwaku Nhyira-Addo on The Asaase Breakfast show from Romania, the opposition MP said the students are traumatised.

“For now, how do we get them back to Ghana, and then number two, you know a lot of them are medical students, some in their final year, sixth year, fifth year, they have invested so much into their education, they were almost there.

Psychological help

“So, they are asking, ‘what happens to our education?’ So, they have been asking for assurances, that there will be some diplomatic effort. If at least we can reach out to their institutions through the education ministry of Ukraine to probably offer them an online option to finish the course while in Ghana.”

Ablakwa added: “Interestingly, while I was also here, I also got a call from the Bulgarian Ambassador who is saying that Bulgaria has just decided that a lot of the students fleeing Ukraine, they are willing to offer them an opportunity to just finish up their courses. They will accept their transcripts. So, I relay that news to them and they were particularly excited about that.”

Ablakwa, who doubles as a ranking member of the Foreign Affairs Committee of Parliament, further called for psychological support for the Ghanaian students when they arrive in Ghana.

17 Ghanaian students in Ukraine arrive in Ghana

Meanwhile, 17 Ghanaian students in Ukraine on Tuesday (1 March) arrived in Ghana at the Kotoka International Airport.

They are the first batch of over 500 students expected to be evacuated to Ghana following the Russia invasion of Ukraine, reports Asaase Radio’s Gemma Appiah.

Addressing the students at the airport, a deputy minister for foreign affairs Kwaku Ampratwum-Sarpong told the students that the government will do everything possible to ensure that more Ghanaians are evacuated.
