Alavanyo to Nkonya: Let’s stop the ethnic conflict and co-exist

Decades of conflicts in the two traditional areas have resulted in bloodshed despite efforts by governments and civil society organisations to resolve them

The youth of Alavanyo have reached out to their rivals in Nkonya to smoke the peace pipe following protracted inter-ethnic conflict in the Volta and Oti regions.

Decades of conflicts in the two traditional areas have resulted in bloodshed despite efforts by governments and civil society organisations to resolve them.

On Monday (1 August 2022), a 31-year-old resident of Nkonya Ntsumuru, Brimpong Daniel was shot and killed by unknown assailant, renewing calls for peace in the region.

No reverse gear

“The youth of Alavanyo are not ready for any activities that will bring retrogression and make us move in the reversed gear to jeopardise the peace we are enjoying,” the Alavanyo Youth Association, said in a statement on Friday (5 August).

They sympathised with the bereaved family of the deceased and the people of Nkonya, adding that as youth and future leaders of Alavanyo, they will strive to ensure that the two areas live in peace.

“We empathise with the youth and people of Nkonya Ntsumuru on their loss. We have never looked forward to any breach in the peace we have been enjoying in the recent past, which is reviving farming and other economic activities in both areas.

“We have been doing everything in our capacity as youth and future leaders to speak to our colleagues to embrace everlasting peace and are putting in place plans to meet the leadership of Alavanyo and Nkonya Youth for Peace to recommence our community visitations we used to embark on and have some fun activities before this unfortunate incident,” the association said.

“Further attacks and gunshots into Alavanyo will not inure to the benefit of anyone. Let us consider the future of our children, ourselves and that of our WASSCE and BECE candidates and give peace a chance,” the statement signed by Samuel Hosunu Akortia, president of the association said.

Meanwhile, the police in the Oti Region have commenced investigation into the recent murder case.
