Kojo Antwi: Ghana’s education system needs overhauling
The music maestro has urged Ghanaians to take pride in their indigenous languages and use them as medium of communication in every level of the country’s education system
Afro-pop, highlife and reggae musical artiste, Kojo Antwi, also known as ‘Mr Music Man’, has said the country needs to overhaul its education system in order to develop.
He said Ghanaians must take pride in their indigenous languages and must work at using them as the only medium of communication in every level of the country’s education system.
Speaking with Kent Mensah on Asaase Radio’s Sunday Night show, the music maestro said, “I think we need to embrace what we have…It’s not about that [politics], I think we all have a part to play. The politicians also have a major part to play but then there are values amongst us that we always try to keep mute… If Ghana [or Africa] is going to move forward we need to do a lot of overhauling and that overhauling starts with our education system…”
He added, “Our [current] education system does not teach our youth how to stand on their own but rather we teach them to be part of a system that is already faulty. We need the youth to exert the change that they want by ensuring that their attitudes and behaviour is in accordance with the future that they want to build.

“I think our leaders must have a plan on where we will be fifty or hundred years from now; they won’t be part of that but there must be a road map that we’ll know this is the direction…”
The music maestro said, “The solution to the oil prices, the solution to try and manage your affairs doesn’t just lie with the government that we bring to office for just four years. We have adapted a system that somebody else must sit somewhere to mark our examinations…We need to overhaul our education system. [A good] education system doesn’t mean that you can rattle English and not be able to speak your own language. That’s not it…”
